PRODUCT NAME: Jerky Direct (JD)

OWNER/S: Daniel Jay

TYPE OF PRODUCT: Jerky based MLM

PRICE: $15.95

SUMMARY: No, Jerky direct is neither a pyramid scheme or a scam, it is a legitimate MLM company however, there are a few problems that I have with it which ultimately don’t make it the most appealing of business opportunities to pursue.

Firstly, the fairly good things about the company is that it’s reasonably affordable to join, the MLM itself is quite unique and the products are USDA approved but, it’s major issues in closing down in the past and what seems like a very low potential for income, not only because it’s a MLM but because the profit margins are so low, make joining JD over other business opportunities out there a tough one to recommend.

FINAL RATING: 1.5/5

RECOMMENDED: No

WHAT IS JERKY DIRECT?

Jerky direct logo

JD is actually among the most unique MLM companies I’ve seen since send out cards and as the name would suggest, yes the company’s main product line consists of selling jerky.

The food market in and of itself is actually very very popular, which I’m sure you know isn’t all that surprising but, what is kind of surprising is the fact that JD has been around since 2004. However, this does not mean that it’s always been moderately successful since starting.

This is because since starting up it did actually collapse at one point. Of course according to the website, JD was founded in. 2004 but, there’s no mention of who the original owners were. The company within its earlier years was acquired by another institution called Attrition, an institute which allowed JD to decline so far down that financial problems forced the company to close.

It was only when Daniel Jay, the current owner of the company, saw potential in JD and decided to relaunch it again in 2016 when the business began doing better.

Daniel was actually a distributor for the company before it collapsed and has also elapsed a time period of 15+ years working in the MLM business so, I’m sure he understands how the MLM business works to a certain extent.

However, this doesn’t mean it’s a great business opportunity per say so, within this review I’ll break down the opportunity for you so that you can make an educated decision on whether JD is worth your time and money.

JERKY DIRECT PRODUCTS

JD has 2 different styles of jerky that is also made by a very experienced jerky maker. The jerky master is actually known as a Master Jerky Maker who is said to have just under 20 years of experience.

As for the 2 different styles of jerky JD makes, they include a Midwest Fresh and thinly cut. The jerky themselves are sold at two 2.5 ounces bags of jerky for $21.75.

Now regarding the flavours that you can purchase for each of the 2 styles, for the Midwest jerky they include the following :

  • Original
  • Peppered
  • BBQ
  • Smokin Hot
  • Southern Style

Whilst the thinly cut style comes in the following flavours :

  • Original
  • Mesquite
  • Teriyaki
  • Smoked
  • Sriracha
  • Hot Chili Lime

The weird thing is that I couldn’t find any genuine opinions on the quality of the jerky from individuals who’ve tried them and although the taste test would ultimately be subjective, it is still kind of unusual to not see any reviews on the quality.

HOW DO YOU MAKE MONEY WITH JERKY DIRECT?

As is the case with pretty much all MLM businesses there are 2 ways to make money with them, JD being no exception.

1. The first method is by directly selling the product to other individuals and in return make a commission for the sales

2. You make money through your recruits and downline, by getting residual income by following and meeting certain criteria as well as make money through bonuses and incentives due to meeting company set goals.

HOW TO GET STARTED

If you want to join JD, the first thing you’d need to do is sign up under an already existing member. The next thing you’d need to do is invest $15.95 for the membership fee and lastly you’ll need to purchase one of their product packs for $21.75 to gain access to the compensation plan.

COMPENSATION STRUCTURE

JD’s compensation plan is quite simple in the sense that there are only 3 different elements to it.

These elements include :

  1. Retail Commissions
  2. Recruitment Commissions
  3. Residual Commissions

Retail Commissions

These are commissions you’ll earn for every product you personally sell. I couldn’t quite find how large the commissions were but, judging it based off what I’ve seen from other MLM’s, I’d assume the commission rate to be around 20%.

Recruitment Commissions

When ever you recruit an individual who signs up for JD’s membership and they also purchases a packet of jerky, you’ll be paid out $5 per pack. Do keep in mind that this bonus will only be paid out if a personal recruit follows through with the two aforementioned steps.

Residual Commissions

JD uses a unilevel structure to pay its affiliates residually. A unilevel structure simply allows for an affiliate to recruit infinitely in the horizontal sense but tends to cap the earning potential vertically. In this case the earning are capped at the 7th level.

How this residual commission works is that for every Product Pack that’s sold, a commission of $5 will be generated. This $5 is then split up between all of the 7 levels and affiliates who find themselves closer to the top of their team will be eligible to earn more.

For example, level 1 Affiliates will earn around  $2 from that $5 commission whilst affiliates in the lower levels like levels 5 and 6 will earn a very small portion of the commission pie, which could be as small as 25 cents.

If you want to check the compensation plan in more detail, I’d suggest watching the video below.

THE NOT SO GOOD THINGS

The Earning Potential Dosen’t Seem All That Good

The fact you only make like $5 per sale from both recruitment and probably retail sales shows how small the potential for earning with JD actually is.

You’d probably need to sell in excess of 400 – 500 products to even consider replacing your full time income through JD, which I’m sure is probably one of the reasons you’re looking at this opportunity right?

Therefore, if making good money is something you’re looking for, JD is unlikely to fulfil this criteria, even if you do somehow recruit hundreds of people.

Moreover, going by how much people make in most other MLM’s, the chances of making $2k+/month is likely to only be achievable for around 1% of all members so, even in the general sense, as in by companies that pay a lot more for recruiting and retail sales, your chances of success would be miniscule already so in my eyes, JD will likely be a lot worse.

JD’s Company History Is A Bit Concerning

The company’s previous history in literally collapsing is kind of a problem in my eyes because if it’s already failed in the past, what’s to say it won’t happen again.

Of course at this point they’ve been up and running for around 4 years but, this past does still make it a little concerning to join JD.

THE GOOD THINGS

It Has A USDA Certificate

Due to this certification you can atleast be put somewhat at ease knowing the products sold are 100% organic and free from synthetic additives.

I don’t know if this matters an insane amount for everyone as it doesn’t necessarily mean the jerky that JD produces is good in terms of how it tastes nevertheless, being backed by the USDA is still a positive for the company as a whole.

IS JERKY DIRECT A PYRAMID SCHEME/SCAM?

No, Jerky direct is neither a pyramid scheme or a scam, it is a legitimate MLM company however, there are a few problems that I have with it which ultimately don’t make it the most appealing of business opportunities to pursue.

MY PERSONAL RECOMMENDATION

I personally will always recommend against using a MLM business model to make money, not because you can’t make money through it (you totally can) but, the system has always seemed shady to myself and is kinda synonymous with the likes of a pyramid scheme or scams (MOBE and Digital altitude).

Instead I prefer working with something created through ones own means and is ultimately dependent on yourself and your work ethic alone.

This method I’m talking about is affiliate marketing.

The reasons as to why I recommend it over MLM based structures are because

– there is no need to recruit constantly

– it is a legitimate method that has been working consistently and continues to grow as more businesses want individuals to promote products

– and because it is free to start up, no unnecessarily large start up funds needed.

The service I recommend is Wealthy Affiliate. It’s free to sign up to and will get you set up and ready to start your affiliate marketing journey within minutes, as it did for me when I begun my journey.

If you have any questions that you would like to ask me regarding JD, feel free to do so in the comments section below and I will get back to you as soon as I can. If you have your own thoughts about JD and would like to talk about it, again feel free to do so in the comments below!
